The Gary Comer
Youth Center

FSM's after-school program at the Gary Comer Youth Center gives high school students the opportunity to create and produce their own talk show/news magazine called Perspectives of Teens in Chicago.

Gary Comer Youth CenterGary Comer Youth CenterAt the Gary Comer Youth Center, Free Spirit Media runs an after-school and summer journalism program through our partnership with After School Matters. The focus of this program is to introduce students to best practices in journalistic reporting, research, and live news.

Students produce news packages, short documentaries, PSAs, and news casts. Students develop a variety of skills, including writing, reporting, producing, directing, on-camera talent, control room and camera operations, and editing. In the summer, FSM offers an beginning-level audio reporting unit program. After developing journalism fundamentals, those students can join our video production journalism programs in the fall.

In January 2010, students launched FSM News, a weekly 10-minute news cast that shows after HoopsHIGH on CAN TV Channel 19 at 8:00 pm. ABC7 is hosting all of the FSM news shows on their website.
