At the Gary Comer Youth Center, Free Spirit Media runs an after-school and summer journalism program.
The focus of this program at GCYC is to introduce students to best practices in journalistic reporting, research, and live news.
Students produce news packages, short documentaries, PSAs, and news casts. Students develop a variety of skills, including writing, reporting, producing, directing, on-camera talent, control room and camera operations, and editing. In the summer, FSM offers a beginning-level audio reporting program. After developing journalism fundamentals, those students can join our video production journalism programs in the fall.
In January 2010, students launched FSM News, a weekly 10-minute newscast that is telecast at the tail end (about 9:49 p.m.) on HoopsHIGH on CAN TV Channel 19 (which starts at 8:00 p.m.). ABC7 features all of the FSM news shows on their community page.
